But they are also potentially lethal for the soldiers carrying them, a US Army officer has said. Maj. Gen. Curtis Taylor told Jack Detsch, a reporter at Foreign Policy, that Army trainers had been warning soldiers about the dangers of taking cellphones on operations. Russian sources claim 89 soldiers were killed in the strikes, while Ukraine put the number at around 400.

When it came to housing, Susan Apel and Keith Irwin thought they had planned adroitly for later life. They bought a four-bedroom house on two acres in Lebanon, N.H., 24 years ago, and “we made sure to pay off the mortgage before we retired,” said Ms. Apel, 71. Ms. Apel, a retired law professor, is having trouble climbing stairs. Mr. Irwin, 71, previously an account manager for a local business, is wearying of yard work and snow shoveling, and finding workers to do those chores instead has become difficult. “We’re seeing the writing on the wall,” Ms. Apel said.

“Calculations that use a slightly larger radius for the size of the Sun yield an eclipse path that is slightly narrower,” said NASA spokesperson Karen Fox in an emailed statement. And even if the NASA map is wrong, Irwin’s calculations indicate it’s only off by a couple thousand feet on the edges. A woman views a map showing the eclipse path during the Solar Eclipse Festival at the California Science Center in Los Angeles, California, on August 19, 2017, two days before the total eclipse on August 21. And NASA also acknowledges that exact measurements of the eclipse path are difficult to pin down. “When you see the total eclipse, you can’t go back,” Guinan said.

The Endangered Languages of New York

Most people think of endangered languages as far-flung or exotic, the opposite of cosmopolitan. All told, there are more endangered languages in and around New York City than have ever existed anywhere else, says Perlin, who has spent 11 years trying to document them. She has published children’s books in Wakhi and other endangered languages of the Pamir mountains in Central Asia. By the start of the pandemic, the city had begun official outreach in nine Indigenous languages and recorded videos in several other endangered languages. We cross-referenced E.L.A.’s New York City language list with three independent databases that track the threat level of languages around the world: Ethnologue, which catalogs all known living languages in the world; UNESCO’s World Atlas of Languages, a survey of all the languages spoken in UNESCO member states; and the Endangered Languages Project, a site to which the public can contribute content, managed by the First Peoples’ Cultural Council and the Endangered Languages Catalogue (ELCat) project at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

On Tuesday, Palestinian authorities proposed a supervised evacuation of Shifa Hospital, a sprawling complex that runs several city blocks in the heart of Gaza City. Gaza health officials and Hamas deny that. The military said soldiers were accompanied by medical teams and had brought medical supplies and baby food as well as incubators and other equipment. But health officials say supplies and extra equipment are not enough to save patients and ongoing fighting makes it almost impossible to safely move patients. The Red Cross said it was “extremely concerned” about the situation at Shifa hospital, noting that hospitals are protected under international humanitarian law and must be spared from violence.
